What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein that is injected into certain areas to help reduce fine lines, relax deep furrows and smooth facial features. The protein works by relaxing the muscles underneath the skin. As the muscle relaxes, the skin on top of the muscle also relaxes, and the wrinkles gradually soften and often disappear.

What areas can be treated?
The most common areas are the wrinkles between the eyebrows (the “glabellar” area), horizontal forehead wrinkles and crows feet.

Does it hurt?
The needle used is a very small and thin. The areas to be injected are first covered with a moisturizing cream that helps to numb the skin. Finally our special iced “magic globes” are applied before and after injection to further reduce any discomfort.

How long does it take to work?
Results are usually seen in five to ten days. We will schedule a follow up appointment in two weeks to make sure you are happy with the results. Additional Botox, if desired, can be given at that time.

What are the possible side effects of treatment?
The most common side effects are temporary bruising and/or redness at the site of injection lasting 24 to 48 hours. Rarely, slight drooping of the eyelid can temporarily occur which can often be improved with special eye drops.

Are there any restrictions afterwards?
You should not participate in any strenuous activity for two hours, or lie down for 3 hours. Also, avoid massaging the area for 4 hours.

How often does Botox need to be repeated?
Botox typically lasts anywhere from three to six months. It is usually a good idea to repeat the injection before the initial injection completely wears off.

Who should not have Botox?
Botox should not be given to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also, individuals who suffer from Myasthenia Gravis, a neurological disease, also should not receive Botox.

What is the cost?
The cost is determined by the number of units of Botox administered. Larger muscles, such as in men’s faces, require more Botox to relax. Also, extra units of Botox may be used to give a more pleasing “arch” to women who have straight eyebrows. A reduced per unit charge is offered when more that one area is treated.
